This Salsa DVD is called "Dance Off The Inches Sizzling Salsa". Just for fun I recently tried this workout because as you know, we all get into a rut with our exercise routines. I usually end up going for a run, or spending some time doing aquasize. It’s nice to try something new for a cardio workout.
Salsa dance to me looks like it really would engage your whole body. The other thing I wanted was a dvd that can be done in a small living room. The Sizzling Salsa DVD is only one of many DVD’s in the Dance Off the Inches series. They are all meant to be fun, easy-to-follow dance workouts.
Salsa DVD Part 1 - Learning the Dance Moves
The DVD is broken down into two parts. It has an instructional Step Guide and then the dance workout section. In the first 17 minute segment, Stella, the instructor slowly teaches you each of the 10 moves then gradually brings up the tempo.
Try to remember the names of the moves because you will use them over and over throughout the rest of the workout. The instructor encourages you to add your own spice to the moves once you have the basics mastered.
Salsa DVD Part 2 - The Dance Section
Once the instructional section is complete you’ll move right into the dance workout section. This part is kind of fun because Stella is joined by four more dancers. It's interesting to see the different dance interpretation.
The workout includes a 5 minute warm-up and 3 dance routines which are around 9 minutes long. These include the Mucho Mambo, Latin Lime Twist, and the Spicy Salsa. Then you get a 3 minute cool down.
What’s really different about this workout DVD is that you can choose different chapters or routines that you prefer. Stella works through the moves and puts them all together. You are qued for upcoming moves with special names for each move. She uses a lot of arm movements to give it more of a dance/Latin flavor. The total workout portion is around 38 minutes.
Pros
- The workout is moderately fun and the steps are challenging.
- Stella explains the moves really well and she's enthusiastic.
- It’s fun to watch and try to copy the dancer’s sexy moves.
- The more comfortable you are with the steps and the more you add your own style the more fun the workout is.
Cons
- It's promoted as a dance workout although some felt that there were no real dance moves.
- Only the Cha Cha is more like dance. The Samba, Mambo, Meringue and Tango moves aren’t really there. There are only slight variations of the same moves.
- This DVD is really aerobics with a hint of the Latin dance steps.
- The [tags]Salsa DVD[/tags]steps aren’t to the beat of the music.
- Familiarity with each dance does not make it much easier to be successful following the format.
- You may need a bit more area to workout because there are a lot of travel moves.
- The music is somewhat boring and more like elevator music.
- Some ladies found the steps boring, repetitive and simple.
- They do a poor job of queing you for the upcoming steps.
- It’s hard to figure out what steps they are doing because the camera doesn't show the participants' feet.
Final Thoughts
The workout intensity is light to moderate and is definitely not strenuous. It does keep your heart rate up though. On the other hand the steps that you do are more advanced beginner to intermediate levels. The biggest disappointment I heard was from other ladies is that are wanting to dance salsa rather than workout. This is more of an aerobic workout as opposed to dancing.
This Salsa DVD is a good workout for a day where you prefer a lighter workout. Overall it gets you moving, provides great instruction, is safe. The only thing wrong with it is that it lacks a wow factor. You must enjoy latin music and dance to enjoy this DVD. Want to check out another fitness DVD? Here's the Yoga Booty Ballet review!
