NutriSystem Launches a New Diet Plan – Here’s the Difference

January 30th, 2009 · 2 Comments

NutriSystem ReviewNutriSystem is one of the oldest diet programs in the world.  It’s actually been around for the past 35 years. They now have a new advanced program out. It’s a relaunch of NutriSystem’s previous plan. With NutiSystem, your diet comes in the form of a non-refrigerated foil pouch.  It requires participants to eat the company’s line of foods in combination with grocery store-bought food like fruits and vegetables.

As part of its new program, many foods are now made with heart-healthy ingredients, including omega-3 fatty acids and soluble fibers. Why is this so much better than the old plan?  NutriSystem claims these two ingredients can control your appetite, reduce hunger and quell cravings between meals.

Dieters select between six, 28-day programs: Women’s, Men’s, Women’s Silver, Men’s Silver, Women’s Diabetic, Men’s Diabetic or Vegetarian. The plan includes menus and checklists so dieters always know what to eat and when.

The NutriSystem Advanced Program comes with the following:

  • Fitness DVDs for men and women
  • A Mindset Makeover Behavior Guide
  • A customized daily meal planner
  • Quick Start Guide
  • 28 days of satisfying NutriSystem Advanced food
  • Weight loss membership and counseling with access to online tools, articles, etc.

Good Points

1. Round-the-clock online and telephone counseling is free.

2. Meals are provided and easy to order- Clients just order either by phone or online.  Decide on a recommended meal plan and foods are delivered to your door.

3. Tailored fitness plans for beginning, intermediate and advanced exercisers, including aerobics, resistance training and yoga.

4. The time commitment involved is minimal.

5. It’s vegetarian friendly. There are a wide variety of veggie-friendly dishes on the plan ranging from tofu inspired creations to black beans and rice.

6. You can always call go online if you want to chat with weight loss counselors. Live counseling, both online and via telephone, creates a private way for people to deal with oftentimes difficult weight loss issues.

7. Support and membership in the community is free when you join and buy the food from the active menu.

8. NutriSystem also offers vitamins and health dietary supplements to clients, to ensure that their customers receive proper nutrition while focusing on weight loss.

Here's what's on the Nutrisystem menu

Bad Points

  • Eating out is possible but not often. Any dish you do order should be low-calorie, low-fat, and low GI.
  • No alcohol is allowed. Calories from alcohol add up and the beverage isn’t a low-GI food.
  • Very strict meal plan.
  • Very expensive. A 28 day meal plan costs close to $300 and even more if you go a la carte.

Find out if Nutrisystem is right for youDiet Duration: Twenty-eight days at a time. The diet continues as long as you’re willing to purchase meals — or until you reach your goal weight.

Who should consider the NutriSystem Diet? People who don’t want to be bothered with preparing their own food and don’t mind subsisting on prepackaged, ready-made, military-like rations.

What do the experts say?
Suzanne Farrell, M.S., R.D., spokesperson for the American Diabetic Association says the following:

The addition of soluble fiber and omega 3s is a positive step as it emphasizes the importance of fiber and healthy fats, something NutriSystem was somewhat lacking before,  However, following a low GI diet for weight loss has not been shown to be effective.

While food delivery programs (like Nutrisystem) might offer portion controlled meals, they are not retraining you on how to eat and how to pick out the best ingredient — so you’re only successful while you’re ordering their product. And the Nutrisystem plan doesn’t teach healthy lifestyle changes to ensure maintenance of the loss (things like tools for eating out, cooking, meal preparation, label reading and exercise).

NutriSystem is great for dieters who love the convenience and there are many real testimonials on the Nutrisystem site that proves that the diet really does work. It’s a nutritionally sound,  low-calorie plan, but subsisting entirely on prepackaged foods might be unrealistic for many people. Also when dieters return to eating in the real world it may be difficult to maintain weight loss.

I started Nutrisystem on August 11th. A friend of mine lost over 40lbs in a year of following the program. Back in 2005-2006 I lost 80lbs following the South Beach program overtime I drifted from those habits and gain back 70 of that in the last few years. I decided I should get back on a program since what I was doing wasn’t working.
I need things to be simple and easy to prepare and Nutrisystem is great for people who like convience. Everything is prepackaged and properly portioned. You supplement the program with Fruits and Veggies since that wouldn’t be very good prepackaged. You can either order the “Favorites” package or pick your own. I tried the “Favorites” package and found things that I definately like and also found stuff I will never order again. Everyone has their own preferences but if you are used to frozen meals from Lean Cuisine, Health Choice, etc you should have no trouble finding something you enjoy in NS.
In the 18 days that I have been on the program I have dropped 18.7 lbs doing some extra exercise on the side which is recommended but not required for success.
For those of you wanting to get an extra discount I can provide you a referral code at it will entitle you to $30 off your first order. If you are new to Nutrisystem it should work just fine. If you are coming back to the program and have been inactive for more than 4 months it should also work for you too. Here’s all that you need to do:
Email shawn_jumbo at yahoo.com and put in the memo NS Referral and I will send you a code within 24 hours. This should work if you do it online or call in your first order.
I was amazed at the number of people complaining about this program I just don’t understand why it is pretty easy to follow and I don’t feel hungry at all!

Before you order Nutrisystem, you should do a Web search for Nutrisystem and “complaints”. Check out the complaints before committing.

Almost all products offered through TV ads seem to have many complaints concerning unauthorized charges, difficulty returning product or stopping services, and other hassles. Most people have to lose some money before they realize that, with few exceptions, you don’t get miracles for a low cost. Just be smart, accept reality instead of fantasy, and you won’t lose your money.
