DIY Expert Shares Her Thoughts on the Grabit Tool

by Theresa on August 29, 2009 · 0 comments

The Grabit is actually two sided drill attachment that removes damaged screw and bolt heads.  With the down turn in the economy these days many of us are taking on do-it-yourself projects. So, is Grabit really a DIYer's dream in the fight against frustrating broken bolts and stripped screws? Let's check out this gadget to see if it's really worth having in your tool box.

Here's what Grabit can remove

Grabit Tool Product Description

  1. The Grabit contains 4 tools to quickly remove bolts no. 10 - 3/8-inch  and screws no. 4-24.
  2. It fits into a standard 3/8 inch chuck of your corded or cordless drill.
  3. It is designed to be used in a variable reversible drill but is also effective using a 1/4 inch hex screwdriver and extracts many type fasteners including: Phillips, Slotted, Hex, Trox, Tri-Wing, Pozidriv, Fearson, most tamper resistant screws and many more.
  4. Extracts screws easily from wood, metal or plastic and removes screws made of any alloy, including soft screws.
  5. Please note that the PRO GRABIT much stronger than regular than the Grabit that's advertised on TV.
  6. There's two parts to the Grabit system. The grabber and an extractor. The grabber's job is suppose to prep the stripped screw so that  the extractor can remove it.  The grabber actually acts like a cutter since it's designed to make the  stripped screw head surface rough. Then the extractor can have a surface to bite into and turn so you can get the screw head out.

Test Results

  • After setting up a board with stripped screws, Andrea secures the Grabit grabber attachment. The cutting part of the screw "The Grabber" time after time is the attachment that actually extracted the screw. So it basically works great but with the wrong tip.
  • When she went to take out a screw with  the actual extractor, it didn't seem wide enough to catch the screw. They then tried a larger attachment and Grabit had no problem catching the screw.
  • When using the[tags]grabit tool[/tags] extractor end you'll need to put some pressure on the drill and also remember to go slowly and put the drill in reverse.

Grabit works as advertised and looks like its a deal! You'll have to improvise a bit to make it work for you. I can't confirm how well Grabit works in every situation with every single screw and bolt. You can pick a set up at Walgreens for $20.  Here's another screaming Billy Mays infomercal with the Arm Bandit. You might have to turn down your volume a bit. :)
