Green Bags! What are they anyways?? They are bags to help you retain the freshness of for your fruits, vegetables, herbs and cut flowers.  Green bags are mainly for fruits and vegetables but there are also other Debbie Meyer freshness bags for different uses such as Yellow – Breads and grains, Red - Meats, Blue - Cheese. You've probably seen these advertised on TV. I think I've got this infomercial memorized!

Interesting Story about The Green Bags

A group of scientists working in exploration in the Antarctic wanted to find a way to prolong the freshness of produce. Fortunately for them, they discovered a region in Japan where they came across Japanese farmers that store their produce in mountain caves. The scientists were astounded that the caves had excellent preserving properties.

The caves were dark, consistently cool and dry. The cave mountain was made of “oya” a clay. What "oya" does is absorb ethylene gas that's naturally given off by fruits and vegetables as they ripen. So it really is ancient knowledge used to give you space age technology.

I love the video demonstration above because they used an assortment of fruits and vegetables to show you that not all produce keeps the same freshness for the same amount of time.

They Used the Following....

  1. Bananas – Ones not in the bag are noticeably brown. Ones in the bag are fresh, firm and bright yellow.
  2. Tomotoes – Ones not in the bag have brown spots and are softening. Ones in the bag are firmer and full of color.
  3. Strawberries - are put in the fridge. They were left for a total of two weeks before they checked them for freshness. The ones in original store container had a little bit of fur on them. The other group in the green bags looked perfectly fresh and firm.
  4. Cucumber - Ones not in the bag started to shrivel and loose its luster. In the bag the cucumbers were fresh looking and firm.
  5. Avocados – Out of bag avocados were soft to the touch. In the bag the avocados are still firm.
  6. Iceburg lettuce – In the bag the lettuce was not as fresh as the other items. It was turning a bit soft and brown on the edges of the leaves but it was still fresher than without the bag.

Pros

  • All of the produce was noticeably fresher and firmer in the green bags but to varying degrees.
  • You will save money and have to shop less for your produce.
  • Very reasonably priced because you get 20 bags for $10.

Handy Tips

  1. Make sure your produce is dry before putting them in the bags.
  2. Put only one type of produce in the bag. ie bananas in one bag, strawberries in another.
  3. I know you all know this but I didn't know for the longest time that some produce should never go in the fridge. Peaches, nectarines, pears and of course bananas because they get all mushy and lose their taste. It should be common knowledge but I've read of others (like myself) putting fruit in the fridge that shouldn't be there in the first place.
  4. Some produce should never be left on the counter such as cucumbers, lettuce, strawberries.
  5. Don’t seal the bags tight or use the twisties – the bags are only meant to seal air out loosely so just fold the bag top over to close.
  6. If you put cut up produce in the bags, the bag may take the flavor out of your cut up  produce.

Green Bags get a two thumbs up from the majority of consumers out there - myself included! They are worth the money!
