Tater Mitts kind of make me laugh. As I write this post up, it's just a bit comical how these gloves are marketed as the such a great time saver for the kitchen. Yet all they're big blue gloves with aquamarine rocks on the bottom. Ha Ha! Isn't it amazing how they make them look so good on the infomercial and low and behold Oops! Forgot to tell the consumer something kind of important!

The video shown above was a test that a news station did on the gloves. I also watched the original [tags]tater-mitts[/tags] infomercial on YouTube. I realize now that in the infomercial they don't show or tell you, you first have parboil the potatoes for five minutes. This is the biggest issue here. Everyone is buying this product on the assumption that you just use the gloves as is. Also the lady in the infomercial with the gloves on, isn't even removing any skin from the potato. She just pretends to be rubbing the potato. Then she opens up her hand with the potato and it's shown perfectly peeled!
Tater Mitts - Product Claims
Just rub your hands over a potato and in a record 8 seconds you have a perfectly peeled potato. (yeah right) Tater Mitts are suppose to protect you from cuts and nicks from your peeler. Also you'll be creating less waste since the Tater Mitts take off less of the potato skin.
Pros
- There's a 60 day money back guarantee (you may need this)
- The gloves rocks would look great at the bottom of your fish tank
- A nifty little french fry cutter is included with your online purchase. Wow!
Cons
-
In the end you don't save time because you have to parboil the potatoes for 5 min then scrape the skin off which usually takes more than 8 seconds. You also now have a dirty pot to clean up. - Gloves won't take the potato eyes out. You have to still dig those out with a knife.
- Gloves are very awkward because their huge size-even for a guys hands.
- Gloves come with their very own "new car" smell. Many reports of a weird smell to the gloves. Not something you want in your food.
- The rocks on the gloves gets embedded into the potato. (Nice!)
- Very hard to wash the potato peel out from between the gravel in the gloves.
- Big waste of water. You have to keep the water running while you use the gloves so the peel doesn't clog up the gravel in the gloves.
Tater Mitts are a nice idea I guess. Although, the big blue gloves with aquamarine rocks didn't seem to be a big hit among consumers. This is mostly due to the fact that the infomercial was so misleading to begin with. They ended up either tossing the gloves and their potatoes out, or returning them for a refund. Just watching the video review, they do actually work. But then considering all the other negative things I heard about the product I personally would never buy them. Let's just play it safe, forget about the Tater Mitts and stick to our traditional peelers!
