Space Bags are those giant Ziploc bags that you can vacuum seal to triple your storage space. After one brutal winter, it's finally time to pack up those ol winter clothes and comforters. I bought some of these Space Bags a few years back. Storing all this stuff is always a challenge especially if your closet space is limited.
Space Bag Claims
- Triple your storage space.
- Superior protection against bugs, moths, dust, mildew, and odors.
- Airtight, waterproof and reusable.
- Each set has a different configuration of Space Bags to meet your varied household needs.
Good Points
- The Space Bag manufacturer claims that they've made the bags 50% stronger and also has an improved slider.
- The product has a one year guarantee so be sure to save your receipts.
- You can also buy them at Bed Bath and Beyond.
Bad Points
This happened to me and many others. My [tags]space bags[/tags]zipper ripped right off of my bags as I was stuffing it full of clothes. I hadn't even got to the vacuum part.- The plastic is thin and the seams tear easily and you can't reseal the bags. Not what you’d expect for a bag that costs $5 each.
- The air tends to leak out of the vacuum sealed bags even if the Space Bag is in perfect condition. For some it lasts only few days, other a few weeks or even months. Even if you follow the instructions the air will find it's way back in.
- You need a vacuum with a nozzle to get the air out...after I got my new vacuum cleaner I wasn't able to seal them up again.
- The space saving feature doesn't work for items that don't have air to compress such as towels, pants, rugs...all those harder, heavier items.
A Few Hints
- Be careful not to overfill the bags or apply pressure before vacuuming the air out.
- If you're having problems with the bags re-inflating, it's been suggested that after you use the blue zipper to zip it shut - run your fingers across the top once or twice each way to make sure it is sealed well.
- The extra large sized Space Bags are too big to be practical for storage purposes. Stick to the small, medium, large and cubed Space Bags.
- The giant Ziploc bags work fine and they are only $2 a bag as opposed to $5. Although you can't vacuum seal them.
- You have to leave five inches from the edge of the zipper to allow for a better seal.
Space Bags claims that they have a stronger design and new and improved zipper. To tell you the truth I don't know when they came out with this new design if this is making a difference with the seal leakage and zipper problems. I'll give the Space Bags site a call. Also if you want to try them they’re at Bed Bath and Beyond and I believe I picked mine up at Walmart. Was so long ago...but at least this way you can easily return the product if something does go wrong with them.

Most of my space bags wouldn’t stay compact while in storage; the few space bags that did remain compact wrinkled my garments so much I stopped using them; I wonder how travelers are expected to use them to save space in suitcases because how many of us have access to vacuum cleaners in hotels? Large plastic bags with zip tops work well if the air is squeezed out as much as possible before closing them.
