Have you ever seen that Ultramatic Bed infomercial? I just can't seem to get that image out of my head. Tony sitting there in his pajamas with that smirk on his face. Like he's wondering "What the hell did I get myself into doing this crazy infomercial." It looks like he's going to burst out laughing at any moment. Well back in the good ol' days (1980s) it was called the Craftmatic Bed. You'll never believe what they used in that old infomercial to try and lure consumers in to buy their beds.
The late night infomercial spots really work in the companies favour. What better product to sell in the middle of the night than something for people who can't sleep. Their tag line..."You spend a third of your life in bed. Why not spend it on a Craftmatic product?"'It's like taking your easy chair to bed with you" say the company materials.
Those old infomercials were hilarious. Showing conventional bed owners writhing in agony. The Craftmatic sleepers always lay happy as clams. Their heads hiked higher than their butts, which were comfortably lying lower than their knees, which were higher than their feet. It is after all an adjustable bed. So what's the appeal? Remember, you can fire up heat and massage options with the click of a remote control. Just add a widescreen TV, fridge and bedpan and you could comfortably spend the rest of your life there!
Well back in the good old days you didn't just get a glossy beautiful free catalog. Nope... you got a top of the line Polaroid Camera! Hey, wait a minute...what do Polaroid Cameras have to do with beds? Where's the connection??
After the release of Tony's rather goofy Ultramatic Bed infomercial, the company realized that didn't connect enough with the younger crowd. So they went ahead and changed the infomercial and soundtrack to something a little more hip. Watch out! This Ultramatic homie will have Ultramatic Beds selling like hotcakes. Old school awesomeness. We bought our adjustable bed at Adjustabeds. It didn’t come with a free Polaroid camera but it’s damn comfortable. I agree, a bedpan, fridge, and TV would be all I need to stay in my bed forever, especially since I lay on a memory foam mattress.
