Grow a Heads Beats Chia Pets Hands Down

by Theresa on October 13, 2009 · 1 comment

Grow a heads are quirky little heads that grow grass hair when watered!  The really neat thing about Grow a Heads is that you can style and personalize them for any occasion. They're a unique specialty toy that were a big hit at a recent International Toy Fair in New York.  I see that they've just been added to the AsSeenOnTV site so I thought I'd do a write up and include some consumer comments.  I couldn't help comparing them to Chia Pets. The major difference is that they actually use rye grass for hair which is not as as finicky to grow as the chia sprouts.

Grow a Heads toy are fun to personalize

How Grow a Heads Work

  • Grow a Heads come complete with a small vase, seeded head, decorating ideas and educational facts about plant growth.
  • Novice plant enthusiasts and gift recipients simply need to soak the head, fill the vase with water, use the included plastic container as a greenhouse. In about 5-7 days, the grass hair  begins to grow from its initial germination. The head of "hair" is fed with water from a wick and infused by natural nutrients, continues to grow quite quickly and lasts for months.

Kids love grow a heads

Personalize and Style Them for Any Occasion

  1. Trim and style the grass hair however you want. A  pigtails, side-comb, mohawk or crew cut. If you ever mess up don't worry it will grow back!
  2. Use bows, ribbons and other accessories – hat, jewelry, sunglasses, or a beard.
  3. Decorate the container with fabric, felt or beads.
  4. There's also Grow-A-Head Greetings which come equipped with a customizable sign, carrying messages for Birthdays, "Get well soon",“Congrats,” or a personalized messages to friends and loved ones to mark any occasion.

Consumer Comments

  • My great grandson was really excited to see the head sprout grass hair. The hair has been growing since Christmas.
  • Fun project for kids and  good to cheer up the winter blues. Provided a pretty patch of green on a sunny window sill.
  • My 2 year old niece had fun watching that hair grow.
  • It's an fun yet inexpensive holiday gifts for people at the office. Picked up one for myself too which gives me a giggle every time I look at it.
  • Cats love to nibble on it and the grass keeps on growing!
  • I noticed that out of 22 reviews,  two ladies mentioned that the seeds didn't spout and another mentioned that the grass died off. The others that tried the Grow a Head  mentioned that they and their kids had fun with it and they didn't mention any problems with the grass growing.

Grow a Heads are a good alternative to Chia Pets that don't always sprout. They're quite inexpensive, around $10 each and are available at gift and specialty retailers as well as on eBay. Here's another infomercial product you might have wondered about. It's called Fun Slide Carpet Skates and I'm not so sure that they're as exciting as they show on TV.
