How to remove pet stains from carpet

Pet stain removal especially on carpet is a HUGE problem in many households. So I thought I’d locate a couple videos for you. Yesterday, I put up the Urine Gone info. I see that many pet owners got the smell out of their carpets but not the stain.  Armed with some simple products that you have around the house, you can get rid of these stains once and for all! These two techniques are very different but I think they might be worth a shot.

Pet Stain Removal Technique #1

This is a vomit stain but I wonder if it would work on other pet stains. Bob did what most of us do when we have a stain but the next day he had a 4 inch yellow stain on the carpet. This technique might seem kind of weird at first but steam cleaners do the same thing as the steam iron.

What You Need
Hairdryer
Cup of hot water
Teaspoon
Dishwasher detergent
Steam iron
Bucket
Plenty of cotton rags
Shop or Dry Vac

How to Get Rid of the Mess

  1. Put teaspoon of dishwashing liquid and put in the cup of hot water and stir.
  2. Use half a cup and dump on the stain.
  3. Use 5 layers of cotton rags that are bigger than pet stain and the iron.
  4. Thoroughly soak rags in bucket of hot water, squeeze out water and lay rags on the stain.
  5. Put iron on medium heat and low steam and place iron directly on top of stain.
  6. It’s important to keep moving the iron around so it forces steam into the carpet and doesn’t harm your carpet.  The stain should be drawing up into the cotton towels.
  7. Rinse rags in clean water put back on floor and reapply heat.
  8. Now that it looks like you have all the stain out put cool clean water in the bucket and soak your rags. Let it be a little wet and set it back on the spot. Press on it and blot the area up until you’re sure that all the dishwashing liquid and stain residue are out of the carpet. He punches the carpet instead of rubbing the rags back and forth.
  9. Dry the carpet with a Dry Vac and suck up the remaining carpet wetness.
  10. You can also use a hair dryer on medium heat and high blow on the hair dryer. Be careful the dryers not to hot or else you melt your carpet.
  11. Presto! Your stain has come out…I hope it works for you!

Pet Stain Removal Technique #2

This is for urine and other solid stuff. This video is from About.com. Please be aware that if you use Urine Gone while using other cleaners it won’t work at all because Urine Gone enzymes become ineffective if they interact with other cleaners. So I’m thinking that in this video he may be recommending a natural enzyme product that does work with other cleaners.

What You Need
Clean old towels
Paper towel
Clean water
White vinegar
Spray bottle
Little brush
Dish detergent
Cleaner that has enzymes or chemicals that break down odor bacteria.

Go here to see the About.com video. It will open in a new window.

How to Clean the Mess

  1. Clean urine mess as soon as possible since urine chemically bonds to carpet.
  2. Soak up the stain by dabbing old towel and paper towel.
  3. Spray area with white vinegar and clean water and blot area with clean towel until dry.
  4. If urine smell persists, use enzyme cleaner to put on stain area.

Remove smell from rug

  1. If you have solids, diarrhea or vomit as stains pick up with paper towel or blot as much out as you can.
  2. Use brush and mild detergent and water mixture.
  3. Blot the area until it is dry.
  4. At this next step to remove odor do either of the following…For basic solids - Spray the vinegar and water solution on the stain.  For diarrhea or vomit - Spray the enzyme cleaner on the stain.

Note: Never use ammonia based products to clean with pets in the house since the urine smell will make pets want to go on that spot.

Pet stain removal is never fun but hopefully these tips will help you out a bit. Tomorrow I’ll put up a more pleasant topic about pets!
