December 8th, 2008 · No Comments

Gift shopping can be pretty darn stressful, I must admit. I love to wait till the week before Christmas hoping to find some better deals and besides I love the adrenaline rush! Usually the selection is not good and I end up getting the usual gift certificates and gift baskets! I wanted to share with you, these handy tips for making your holiday shopping a little easier.

Gift Shopping Tips - Gotta love those crowded malls!

Gift Shopping Tips - Gotta love those crowded malls!

1. If it’s on sale don’t buy it for that reason alone. It’s always thrilling to find a great deal. I’m guilty of this myself. I’ll buy it just for the sake that the item’s on sale. You think your saving money. But what if it’s something you or the person your buying it for really doesn’t need or want it in the first place. Ask yourself - would you normally buy this if it wasn’t on sale?  You’ll be focusing less on the thrill of the savings and more on what you are actually spending it on. Which ends up being something you may not need in the end. Be careful you emotionally don’t get carried away with the sale and keep your wits about you!

2. It’s always better to spend more for quality. It’s better to  spend more for items that give you or your loved one a lifetime of wear than buying lots of cheaper things. If you’re thinking long term - think of what will be appropriate for any occasion and will always be in style. Remember that stuff that’s on sale are things that nobody wants to buy. If the value and quality are there, don’t be afraid to pay full price.

3. Educate yourself on what quality really is. If you never tried to buy quality things you might need to educate yourself on what qualities make a good brand. Go into the more expensive boutiques and touch, see and feel and ask the clerk questions. Then take what you learned from that experience and apply it to shopping in the manufacturer’s outlets, discount shops and mass market stores.

4. Quality goods are available at all price points. There has never been a better time for shoppers to find quality goods for less. They even rival the luxury brands. You don’t have to be stuck buying the the really expensive well known brand names anymore just to get quality. If you understand the quality features of the top name brand products, you can shop effectively anywhere.

5. Before you head out to shop, plan in advance. Research over the internet the brands and products that you want. Which stores are you going to check out.  This way you wont be impulsive.  Retailers love to play to emotion and pepper their stores with emotionally laden cues to encourage you to spend.

Gift Shopping is easy if you focus on great value and only look for things you really need. Don’t forget to ask about the return policy and keep that sales receipt! You never know if later you’re gifts might need to be returned or exchanged.  Want to find out what your gift giving personality is? Check out my latest Christmas Trivia blog post!
